Pelvic Pain and Pressure: Coping Strategies

Pelvic Pain and Pressure: Coping Strategies
One common challenge is pelvic pain during pregnancy, experienced by about 72% of expectant mothers. We're here to provide you with scientifically proven ways to ease the discomfort and ensure you enjoy every moment of this special time.
Early Pregnancy: Hormonal Changes and You
During early pregnancy, you might be taken aback by the sudden appearance of pelvic pain. Hormones, especially relaxin, play a vital role here. Relaxin helps your ligaments and tendons stretch to prepare your pelvis for childbirth.
While relaxin itself isn't the cause of pelvic pain, the changes in ligament and tendon elasticity can lead to hip and pelvic pain during this stage.
🔍 Spotlight: Relaxin hormone and its role in pelvic pain.
Natural Relief in Early Pregnancy: Pamper Yourself
While pregnancy limits some treatment options, you can still find natural ways to ease pelvic pain:
  • Prenatal massage: Getting a specialized prenatal massage can help to reduce stress hormones, relax your muscles, and increase blood flow. The boost in circulation after a massage will not only ease your discomfort, but may also help you sleep better.
  • Chiropractic care: Chiropractic care is generally considered safe during pregnancy. Through spinal manipulation and adjustments, a visit to the chiropractor may help relieve some of your pelvic pain.
  • Exercise and stretching: If your doctor has cleared you for exercise, staying active within your pain limits is one of the best ways to prevent and ease pelvic pain during pregnancy. Pelvic tilt exercises in particular can help strengthen your muscles and improve your posture to provide relief from pelvic pain.
🔍 Spotlight: Prenatal massage and its benefits for expectant mothers.
Second and Third Trimesters: Weight Distribution Woes
As your pregnancy progresses, relaxin continues to affect your ligaments, leading to pelvic pain in the second and third trimesters. Weight distribution changes due to a growing belly may also cause discomfort, regardless of your position.
🔍 Spotlight: Understanding the impact of relaxin and weight distribution on pelvic pain.
Natural Relief in Later Trimesters
During the second and third trimesters, you can still use the previously mentioned remedies with some modifications:
  • Sleep on your side: Your doctor will advise you to sleep on your side after your first trimester. This is because your growing uterus can put pressure on blood vessels, restricting the blood flow to both your heart and your baby’s heart.
  • Lifestyle changes: Basic lifestyle changes should also be made during your second and third trimesters. Wear comfortable shoes with little to no heel and plenty of support, especially if you plan to be walking or exercising.
  • Pregnancy pillows: Pregnancy pillows (also known as body pillows) have become popular for pregnant women. There are a variety of shapes and sizes when it comes to pregnancy pillows, but one that is specifically designed to be placed between your knees is best for relieving pelvic pain.
🔍 Spotlight: The importance of side sleeping during pregnancy.
When to Seek Medical Attention
While some pelvic pain is normal, certain symptoms warrant immediate medical attention:
  • Severe pain: Pain that you can't walk or talk through.
  • Bleeding, fever, or chills: Possible signs of complications.
  • Persistent nausea and vomiting: May indicate a serious issue.
  • Preterm labor: If you have persistent back and pelvic pain that comes and goes (with no relief after resting and lying down), you could be experiencing preterm labor.
  • Preeclampsia: According to the Preeclampsia Foundation of America, 5-8% of all pregnant women experience preeclampsia. The condition, characterized by high blood pressure and protein in your urine, can develop at any time after 20 weeks.
  • Placental abruption: Your placenta typically implants high on the uterine wall and doesn't detach until after your baby is born. In rare cases, though, the placenta can separate from the uterine wall, causing constant and worsening pain in the lower abdominal region.
🔍 Spotlight: Recognizing warning signs and when to contact your doctor.

I had such bad hip pain around 14 weeks(this isn't my first pregnancy)that I ended up starting back regular adjustments at a chiropractor. It has helped tremendously. If you do go that route make sure you find a chiropractor who specializes in pregnancy and is Webster Method trained as pregnancy adjustments are different than regular adjustments

Yep, same I'm not going to the hospital because everytime I go they act like I'm making up my symptoms. So unless my water breaks, or I'm having legit contractions or there's spotting/bloody discharge I'm staying at home.
