Hemorrhoids, a pregnancy symptom

Hemorrhoids

Is it normal?
Good news! Hemorrhoids during pregnancy are actually quite common.

In fact, about 50% of all pregnant women will experience them. So don't worry, you're not alone!

So why do they happen?

The increased blood flow and pressure in the pelvic area during pregnancy can cause the veins in your rectum and anus to enlarge, leading to hemorrhoids.

Plus, the increased levels of hormones can also make the veins more relaxed, which exacerbates the issue.

But don't fret! There are things you can do to help relieve the symptoms and keep them under control.
Prevent and care
Hemorrhoids are a common symptom during pregnancy, caused by increased pressure on the rectum. Proper management of hemorrhoids is essential to avoid discomfort and potential complications.
  • Maintain regular bowel movements by including fiber-rich foods in your diet.
  • Avoid straining during bowel movements.
  • Apply over-the-counter creams or ointments for relief, but consult with a healthcare provider before use.
Hemorrhoids, swollen blood vessels in the rectal area, can be a discomfort during pregnancy, affecting approximately 25% of expectant mothers.

When to consult?
If you're experiencing severe pain or heavy bleeding, it's best to reach out to your healthcare provider.

They can help rule out any other issues and ensure that everything is okay with both you and your little one.

Also, if your hemorrhoids are making it difficult for you to go about your daily life or causing discomfort during important activities, it's always a good idea to check in with your doctor.

They may be able to recommend treatments or lifestyle changes to help alleviate your symptoms.

And lastly, if you just need some reassurance or want to make sure you're on the right track, don't hesitate to reach out to your doctor.

They are there to support you and help you have a happy and healthy pregnancy!
Top Asked Questions

Are there any home remedies for relieving hemorrhoid discomfort during pregnancy?

Over-the-counter creams or ointments, sitz baths, and maintaining good bowel habits can help alleviate hemorrhoid symptoms.

Yep. Had hemorrhoid with my son 2 years ago and now it’s back with my daughter. I’m going to be getting it removed after birth. I’ve tried other “remedies” and they don’t work for me. But do go get some hemorrhoid cream.

What can be done about hemorrhoids? I use tucks pads and apply an ointment but I am very uncomfortable. I have never had a hemorrhoids before but how long does it usually last? It's painful and itchy and a huge inconvenience all the time.

To be honest they usually don’t go away on there own even with those hemorrhoid creams and tucks pads just make them not so itchy and uncomfortable. I’m going to a proctologist after I have the baby because it’s embarrassing and painful if it bleeds at times.

Constipation is the main cause of hemorrhoids and pregnancy can cause constipation for mant woma . Increase fiber intake, drink lots of water, ask your doctor about miralax or gentile laxitive. Also preparation H suppository can help too.

I cought it too about a week ago. Keep an eye on your temp and make sure to keep it below 101. My doctor told me to take Tylenol every 8 hours and if I get over 101 and cant get it down to go to the er cause the heat can hurt the baby. I took a couple cold showers and was fine, just wanted to give a heads up.
