Hyperemesis, a pregnancy symptom

Hyperemesis
Hyperemesis gravidarum during pregnancy is a condition that causes severe and excessive nausea and vomiting, which can lead to dehydration and weight loss.

It can be tough to deal with, but it's important to know that you're not alone and that there are ways to manage it.

Is it normal?
Hyperemesis gravidarum is a relatively uncommon but normal condition that can occur during pregnancy.

It's thought to be caused by the changes in hormone levels that occur during pregnancy, particularly an increase in the hormone human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG). This can lead to increased sensitivity to smells and tastes, which can trigger nausea and vomiting.
Prevent and care
Proper management of hyperemesis, such as staying hydrated and eating small, frequent meals, is important to avoid potential complications.
  • Hyperemesis gravidarum is a severe form of morning sickness that can't be prevented.
  • Focus on staying hydrated and nourished; consult with a healthcare provider for treatment.
  • In severe cases, hospitalization may be necessary for intravenous fluids and medication.
Factors that may increase your risk of developing hyperemesis gravidarum (HG) include a family history of HG, carrying multiple pregnancies (e.g., twins or triplets), and being pregnant for the first time.

When to consult?
It's important to consult a doctor if you experience severe nausea and vomiting during pregnancy, especially if you are unable to keep food or fluids down.

Additionally, if you are losing weight or are unable to function normally due to nausea and vomiting, it's important to seek medical help. Your doctor may recommend treatments such as medication or IV fluids to help manage your symptoms and ensure the health of you and your baby.
Top Asked Questions

It often begins early in the first trimester and may continue into the second trimester.

Mine was so bad. Only thing that helped sometimes was taking nausea meds up the butt lol 😂 and eating or atleast trying to keep something down right when you wake up and eat small throughout the whole day. I felt worse when I had no food in me. I’m 24 weeks still sick but not all day every day anymore.

Today I think I have found the solution for my hyperemesis. I was put on a zofran pump and home IV BUT I was still feeling nauseous, acidity, and vomiting still. BUT today during one of my bad nausea moments my gold seamoss arrived. One spoonful with some cold apple sauce and BAM! Nausea is GONE 😭 I literally am in tears because of the relief. I think I can make it 🙌🏾💃🏾 #hyperemesis #HGMom #SeamossGel

I'm willing to give this a shot! Yesterday was by far one of the worst days to date. I couldn't even hold down water or saltine crackers. I love some applesauce so I think this may be the trick for me too

I know I should be counting my blessings, but after having hyperemesis with my first, it kind of concerns me with how good I’ve been feeling this time around.

Is constant nausea a symptom of hyperemesis gravidum? Its not just morning sickness, its all day everyday. I don't throw up much although I could vomit pretty easily of I wanted to.

I was told today that as long as I can keep something down without vomiting, even just a little bit, that's it's not HG. They said if I do go a while 24hrs without keeping anything down then I should go to the ER to get fluids.... Not sure if I agree though. I'm super dehydrated and feel weak

thank you. I'm sorry to hear that. I feel about the same. I see my dr next Thursday so I'm just trying to stick it out till then. I can keep fluids down as long as its not plain water 🤢 and as long as I'm eating what I crave I'm okay, but sometimes I'll make myself vomit to feel a little bit better even just for a moment.
