Your Baby at 3 Weeks

As we progress to three weeks post-fertilization, a significant milestone occurs—your fertilized egg transitions into an embryo, taking its first steps in this extraordinary developmental journey.

Despite its minute size, equivalent to a poppy seed and measuring no more than 1 millimeter, the complexity of its development is profound.

Baby’s Changes Overview
Open 3D Baby to see all changes
  • Embryonic Status: The blastocyst, a ball of cells, attains its embryonic status and begins its critical phases of division and differentiation.

  • Division and Differentiation: The cells segregate into two distinct groups: one forming the embryo and the other developing into the placenta, the lifeline that provides nutrients and eliminates waste.

  • Implantation: The blastocyst, now an embryo, anchors itself to the uterine wall, initiating the formation of the amniotic sac and, within it, the yolk sac. This yolk sac will generate the embryo's first red blood cells and blood vessels.

  • Hormonal Support: The embryo produces key hormones like human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) to sustain the pregnancy and prevent the ovaries from releasing further eggs.

  • Neural Development: Remarkably, the neural tube, a precursor to the brain, spine, and backbone, has already begun to form.

This period marks the detectable presence of hCG in a home pregnancy test, offering the first confirmation of the miraculous process unfolding within.

Helping baby's development
  • Nutritional Diversity: Embrace a varied diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains to provide a spectrum of nutrients.

  • Avoid Harmful Substances: It is crucial to abstain from smoking, alcohol, and illicit drugs, as these can impede your baby's development.

  • Adequate Rest: Pregnancy demands additional energy; ensure you get 8 to 10 hours of sleep nightly to support this vital process.

  • Hydration: Drink at least 80 ounces of water daily to maintain hydration, crucial for both maternal well-being and embryonic development. Enhance water intake with fruit infusions or soda water for variety.

Top Asked Questions
What are the early signs of pregnancy?

Early signs can include implantation bleeding, mild cramping, breast changes, increased urination, and heightened sensitivity to smells. These can vary from woman to woman.

Is it safe to have caffeine during the first trimester?

It's best to limit caffeine intake during the first trimester. Aim for no more than 200 milligrams (about one 12-ounce cup of coffee) per day to reduce the risk of pregnancy complications.

When can I take a home pregnancy test?

Home pregnancy tests are typically reliable after the first day of your missed period. Testing earlier may result in a false negative.

What changes should I make in my diet now that I'm pregnant?

Focus on a well-balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins. Ensure you're getting enough folic acid, iron, and calcium. Avoid foods with a high risk of foodborne illnesses.
