What is a Late Miscarriage? Understanding, Coping, and Healing

What is a Late Miscarriage? Understanding, Coping, and Healing
While it is a heartbreaking and difficult experience, it's important to understand what a late miscarriage entails and how to navigate through this journey of grief and healing.
Causes: Unraveling the Unknown
Late miscarriages, which occur between the 20th and 24th week of pregnancy, can be caused by a variety of factors.
It's essential to remember that in most cases, it is not the result of something you did or didn't do. Some common causes include:
  • Chromosomal abnormalities: Genetic issues that may affect fetal development.
  • Placental problems: Complications with the placenta, such as placental abruption or placenta previa.
  • Infection or illness: Certain infections, such as urinary tract infections or infections of the uterus.
  • Medical conditions: Pre-existing health conditions like diabetes or high blood pressure that can impact pregnancy.
Grieving Process: Honoring Your Emotions
Experiencing a late miscarriage can bring about a range of emotions, from sadness and anger to confusion and guilt.
It's important to remember that everyone grieves differently, and there is no right or wrong way to navigate through this process.
Here are some ways to honor your emotions and find support:
  • Allow yourself to feel: Give yourself permission to experience the full range of emotions that come with grief. It's okay to cry, to be angry, or to feel numb. Each feeling is valid and part of your healing journey.
  • Seek support: Reach out to your partner, friends, or family members who can provide a listening ear and a shoulder to lean on. Consider joining a support group or seeking professional counseling to help you navigate this difficult time.
  • Take care of yourself: Prioritize self-care during this period. Engage in activities that bring you comfort and peace, such as taking walks in nature, journaling, practicing mindfulness, or seeking solace in creative outlets.
Healing and Moving Forward: Finding Strength and Hope
While the pain of a late miscarriage may never completely disappear, with time and support, healing and finding hope are possible.
It's important to remember that you are not alone in this journey, and there are resources available to help you move forward:
  • Remembering your baby: Find ways to honor and remember your baby, such as creating a memory box, planting a tree, or writing a letter. These acts of remembrance can provide comfort and a sense of connection.
  • Planning for the future: When you feel ready, consider discussing future pregnancy plans with your healthcare provider. They can provide guidance and support to ensure the best possible outcome for your next pregnancy.
  • Support networks: Connect with organizations and online communities that specialize in supporting families who have experienced late miscarriages. Sharing your story and hearing from others who have walked a similar path can be incredibly healing.

Had this happen yesterday and went to the ER after some somewhat rough sex. Got diagnosed with a threatened miscarriage. Somebody said this looked like something was healing. My hCG level was a 58. Has anybody experienced this?

I think I had another early miscarriage, but I'm not completely sure. Period is still very late, and no positive test. Day 19 of cycle had some weird discharge and some bleeding.

I had a miscarriage last week. Was my first pregnancy. I was upset and wasn't able to ask the doctor about several things. How long does bleeding and cramping last ? what is the right amount of time to allow for healing before I can sleep with my husband again? I figured waiting about two weeks for healing and waiting for bleeding to stop.
