Common Complications at the 3rd Trimester

Common Complications in the 3rd Trimester
Your Body's Final Sprint: What's the Deal with Braxton Hicks?
So you've made it to the third trimester, go you!
🌟 Your baby is almost here, but before that big day, you might experience some "practice contractions" known as Braxton Hicks contractions.
These are different from real labor contractions and are generally more uncomfortable than painful.
  • How to Identify: These contractions make your belly feel tight, but they're irregular and usually disappear when you change positions.
  • What To Do: Keep yourself hydrated and try shifting positions or walking around.
  • When to Call a Doctor: If the contractions become regular, last for more than a minute, and start coming closer together, it might be real labor! 🏥
You've Got Fluid, But Is It Too Much or Too Little?
Let's talk about amniotic fluid, the protective liquid that your little one is floating in.
Both oligohydramnios (low levels of amniotic fluid) and polyhydramnios (high levels of amniotic fluid) can be concerning.
  • Oligohydramnios Symptoms: Darker than usual amniotic fluid, decreased fetal movement, and a small baby bump for your stage in pregnancy.
  • Polyhydramnios Symptoms: An unusually large baby bump, shortness of breath, and swelling in the legs and feet.
  • Medical Tests: Your healthcare provider may recommend an ultrasound or amniotic fluid index (AFI) measurement to check the fluid level.
Remember, while these conditions might sound scary, they are usually manageable with medical intervention. 😇
Sweet or Not-so-Sweet: Managing Gestational Diabetes
Here comes the glucose test!
This isn't about baking, but it's about something just as sweet—your blood sugar. Gestational diabetes can develop during pregnancy and could affect both you and your baby if not managed properly.
  • Symptoms: Frequent urination, feeling overly thirsty, and fatigue.
  • Diagnostic Tests: You'll typically undergo a Glucose Challenge Test and, if needed, a Glucose Tolerance Test.
  • Management: Diet adjustments, regular exercise, and in some cases, medication like insulin.
Please consult your healthcare provider to formulate a treatment plan tailored for you. You got this, mama! 💪
The Weight of the Matter: Preeclampsia Awareness
Last but certainly not least, let's talk about preeclampsia.
This is a condition that usually occurs after the 20th week of pregnancy and is characterized by high blood pressure and can involve other organs like the liver and kidneys.
  • Warning Signs: Sudden weight gain, severe headaches, and blurry vision.
  • Monitoring: Regular blood pressure checks and urine tests are a must!
  • Management: Medication to lower blood pressure, bed rest, and in severe cases, early delivery.
So there you have it, a roundup of some common complications you might face during the final trimester. Remember, while these might sound daunting, your healthcare provider is there to guide you every step of the way.
Stay empowered and informed! 🌈

Anyone start leaking amniotic fluid in the 3rd trimester? How did you know? And did it cause complications? I’ve already messaged my midwives, just have stressed myself out now 😅

Hopefully it’s something similar! I’m waiting to hear back from my midwife now because everything I looked up said to at least notify someone! But thanks for telling me your experience!

Has anyone else been prescribed unisom to help with insomnia in your 3rd trimester. If so, is it safe or cause any complications. First time mom and have taken no medication throughout my pregnancy.
