Bloody nose

Bloody nose
If you're experiencing a sudden bloody nose, don't worry. Increased blood flow and hormonal changes can lead to tiny blood vessels in your nose rupturing more easily.

Is it normal?
This is a relatively common pregnancy symptom that affects many expecting mothers. You might experience nosebleeds more frequently in your second and third trimester.

You might panic when you see blood coming out of your nose, but rest assured, it is usually not a cause for concern.
Prevent and care
Bloody nose is a common symptom during pregnancy, caused by hormonal changes and increased blood volume.

It's important to manage bloody nose, mainly to avoid discomfort.
  • Keep the nasal passages moist with saline sprays or humidifiers.
  • Gently blow your nose rather than forcefully.
  • Avoid picking or scratching the inside of the nose.
Increased blood flow during pregnancy can make the nasal passages more sensitive. I advise using a humidifier at night and saline sprays to keep the nose moist, reducing the likelihood of nosebleeds.

When to consult?
When it happens, just wait, or apply gentle pressure to your nose for a few minutes.

If it continues to bleed for more than 20 minutes or if you experience other symptoms such as fever, shortness of breath or dizziness, contact your doctor immediately.
Top Asked Questions
Why are bloody noses more common during pregnancy?

Due to hormonal changes and increased blood volume, blood vessels in the nose may swell and rupture more easily.

What should I do if I get a bloody nose while pregnant?

Sit up straight, lean forward slightly, and gently pinch the soft part of your nose for a few minutes.

Can frequent bloody noses be a sign of a health problem in pregnancy?

They're usually not a concern, but frequent or heavy nosebleeds should be discussed with a healthcare provider.

Anyone having severe nausea? Nothing OTC or Prescribed is helping I'm 6mo and I'm beyond miserable. I hate to go but I'll be going to the hospital tomorrow due to other problems. Also when I clean or blow my nose it's bloody even when I spit anyone going through the same?

Y’all I have a question and it’s freaking me out but is it normal to puke constantly with a bloody nose?? My nose isn’t clogged up, or anything, and I’ve never had this problem until yesterday.

Well your body is producing a lot more blood then normal so sometimes it can strain your blood vessels. The vomiting is normal for me I didn’t vomit but I did have unbearable nausea till I was 15 weeks.

After all that in the ER yesterday, I had to throw up in the morning (which my morning sickness is getting better, I only throw up like once every 2-3 days) and when I did, I threw up a little bit of blood. I thought maybe I had a bloody nose in the middle of the night, but I checked and there is no dried up blood in my nose or on my pillow. Absolutely no indication of a bloody nose. Waiting an hour to call my ob and notify them, see if they tell me it's normal and maybe the tylenol IV had a bad reaction to my stomach or if I need to go back to the ER..

I done this in early pregnancy I mean like 8 or 9 weeks or so I'm now 31w5d I was trying to throw up absolutely nothing bc I hadn't eaten yet and I already threw up all the stomach acid and when I went to throw up again there was blood but definitely call to let them know I didn't 😅

Same. Humidifier or vaporizer will help running it at night while sleeping.
