All You Need to Know about Heartburn

All You Need to Know about Heartburn during Pregnancy
Many pregnant women experience heartburn, also known as acid indigestion, due to hormonal changes and the physical pressure on your stomach as your baby grows.
Here's everything you need to know about managing and preventing heartburn during pregnancy:
Understanding Heartburn
  • Heartburn occurs when stomach acid flows back up into the esophagus, causing a burning sensation in the chest and throat.
  • Hormonal changes during pregnancy, specifically the hormone progesterone, relax the muscles, including the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), leading to acid reflux.
  • The growing uterus puts pressure on the stomach, pushing acid up into the esophagus and causing heartburn.
Tips for Managing Heartburn
To alleviate the discomfort of heartburn during pregnancy, try the following tips:
  1. Eat small, frequent meals: Opt for smaller, more frequent meals throughout the day to prevent your stomach from becoming too full.
  2. Avoid trigger foods: Identify and avoid foods that trigger or worsen your heartburn symptoms, such as spicy foods, citrus fruits, tomatoes, chocolate, and caffeine.
  3. Stay upright after meals: Avoid lying down immediately after eating and remain in an upright position or take a leisurely stroll to aid digestion.
  4. Sleep in an elevated position: Prop yourself up with pillows or use a wedge-shaped pillow designed for pregnancy to elevate your upper body while sleeping.
  5. Wear loose-fitting clothing: Opt for loose-fitting, comfortable clothing to reduce pressure on your stomach and alleviate discomfort.
Natural Remedies for Heartburn
Consider these natural remedies to relieve heartburn during pregnancy:
  • Ginger: Sip on ginger tea or try ginger candies to soothe your stomach and aid digestion.
  • Chamomile tea: Enjoy a cup of chamomile tea after meals to calm inflammation in the stomach.
  • Slippery elm: Take slippery elm in capsule form or as a tea to help coat the esophagus and provide relief from heartburn.
When to Seek Medical Advice
While heartburn during pregnancy is usually manageable, it's important to consult your healthcare provider if:
  • You experience severe or persistent heartburn.
  • Heartburn interferes with your daily activities and sleep.
  • You need further guidance or recommendations for suitable antacids or medications.
  • Your healthcare provider can rule out any underlying conditions that may be causing your symptoms.

I have a genuine question. So I’ve been dealing with severe heartburn and SPD since week 17 (I’m 29 weeks) and I don’t know if it is okay to wake my husband when I can’t sleep due to my heartburn. I know he loves me and would do everything he could for me but I can’t sleep. My heartburn is making me physically sick and I don’t know what to do. It is currently 4:45am.

All this beautiful hair 😘😘. I thought my baby was gone be bald headed y’all, cause I didn’t have heartburn at all. But I thought about it, my husband had morning sickness and heartburn the whole pregnancy. His heartburn got so bad later on in the pregnancy and now we know why. Better him than me 🥴🤣🤷🏽‍♀️

I take tums and it helps me. But I know for some that’s not enough so I have read about putting a teaspoon of baking soda in water.

Rolaids. Milk with honey in it. And a bowl of Honey Nut Cheerios! Those things have been helping me throughout my pregnancy!

Coffee is acidic so it’ll spark up some heartburn. I’m sorry you’re dealing with that. It’s awful. I get reflux 😖

Heartburn has been so unbelievably bad especially at night 🤦🏻‍♀️ I literally have to sit up and try to burp. Tums no longer work for me. I know it’s a myth but baby girl better come out with a helmet full of hair with all the heartburn she’s giving me.😂😂😂

Any mama's found a natural remedy for heartburn? I'm taking TUMS but it says no more than 5 per day and the heartburn is in overdrive now...I need other ways to calm it.
