Your body at 10 weeks of pregnancy

Your Body at 10 Weeks
At 10 weeks, the journey of pregnancy is becoming increasingly tangible, both emotionally and physically.

As a midwife, I've witnessed the diverse range of changes and challenges expectant mothers face during this pivotal time.

Mood changes

Linea Nigra

Fatigue: Nearly all pregnant individuals report feeling significantly more tired, a direct consequence of the body's increased metabolic demands and hormonal changes.

Morning Sickness: A prevalent symptom for many, peaking around this period due to rising hCG levels.

Mood Variability: Fluctuations are frequent, attributed to hormonal shifts impacting neurotransmitter levels.

Linea Nigra Development: This dark line down the abdomen is noted in some individuals, linked to increased melanin production.
Changes in your body are becoming more evident. You may notice your clothes fitting differently as your body prepares for pregnancy.

Is it normal?
The appearance of cravings in 50% to 90% of pregnant women during this stage is intriguing.
These urges may reflect the body's intuitive need for specific nutrients or be hormonally driven. Simultaneously, the persistence of morning sickness serves as an indicator of the body's adaptation to pregnancy, expected to diminish as the second trimester approaches.
Mood swings during this time can feel overwhelming. The significant hormonal upheavals, particularly in estrogen and progesterone, contribute to these emotional rollercoasters, affecting mood regulation and stress response systems.
The development of the linea nigra is a harmless condition resulting from hormonal influences on skin pigmentation, typically fading post-delivery.
Top Asked Questions
Top 5 questions answered
Is it normal to feel baby movements at this point?

It's unlikely you'll feel the baby's movements at this point. You may start at around 16-20 weeks.

How often should I see the doctor?

In a normal pregnancy, you can expect once a month until 28 weeks, then every 2 weeks until 36 weeks, then weekly until delivery.

What are the best prenatal vitamins to take?

When choosing a prenatal vitamin, it's important to look for one that contains at least 400 micrograms of folic acid, 200-300 mg of calcium, and iron. Check with your doctor to ensure the vitamin is appropriate for your individual needs.

How can I cope with the changes in my body?

Embrace your beautiful changes, seek support (your partner, friends, family or even a professional) if you feel you need it & engage in self-care during your pregnancy.

Is it safe to have a pedicure?

Pedicures are generally safe. It is, however, important to avoid certain chemicals. Let your nail technician know you're pregnant so they can adjust their nail care routine.

Taking care of yourself
Dietary Management: Embrace your cravings within reason, balancing them with nutrient-rich foods to support fetal health.

Stress Management: Incorporate relaxation techniques such as meditation or prenatal yoga to manage mood swings.

Meal Planning: Small, frequent meals can mitigate nausea and maintain energy levels.

Sun Protection: To protect the linea nigra and prevent hyperpigmentation, apply high SPF sunscreen or cover up when outdoors.
Teaser for next week
As you progress into week 11, you might notice a decrease in nausea and an increase in appetite.

However, an uptick in vaginal discharge may occur, a natural process during pregnancy to prevent infections.

Next week, we'll delve into these changes and how to manage them effectively.

Why do I feel so empty right now. Today would have been 10w pregnant and with twins passed one and home and had to do a emergency D&C today just got home and now feel empty like my body failed. But they said 1 &3 go through this and their babies don't make it and it's nothing I did wrong. Babies to perfect for earth #sadmommarightnow

Yes that’s okay. My baby’s heart rate was 170 and they said that was good at 10 weeks. The further you get in your pregnancy, the baby’s heart rate goes down. At 14 weeks my baby’s heart rate was 150bpm. Every pregnancy is different but I was told, you only need to worry if the baby’s heart rate is over 200bpm..
