Hear Your Baby’s Heartbeat At Home

How to hear your baby's heartbeat
While most expectant parents rely on healthcare provider appointments to hear the baby's heartbeat, it is possible to hear it at home using a stethoscope.
Here are some steps to help you listen to your baby's heartbeat through a stethoscope.
Choose a Suitable Stethoscope
Select a good-quality stethoscope
Invest in a stethoscope designed for medical use. Look for a stethoscope with a pediatric or neonatal diaphragm attachment, as it is more suitable for listening to a baby's heartbeat.
Find a Quiet Environment
Choose a quiet and peaceful area
Find a calm and quiet space in your home where you can concentrate without distractions. This will make it easier to hear the baby's heartbeat clearly.
Apply the Stethoscope Correctly
  • Place the earpieces in your ears: Insert the earpieces of the stethoscope firmly into your ears. Ensure they fit comfortably and create a proper seal.
  • Locate the diaphragm: The diaphragm of the stethoscope is the circular, flat part. Place it gently on your lower abdomen, right below your belly button.
  • Adjust the pressure: Apply light pressure with the diaphragm to your abdomen. Move it around slightly until you find the best position to detect the baby's heartbeat.
Listen Closely and Be Patient
  • Listen attentively: Keep your focus on the stethoscope and listen carefully. It may take a few moments to locate the baby's heartbeat, so be patient and take your time.
  • Move the stethoscope: Gradually move the stethoscope around your abdomen in small increments, listening for the rhythmic sound of the baby's heartbeat.
  • Adjust the pressure and angle: Experiment with the pressure and angle of the stethoscope to find the optimal position for hearing the heartbeat. Remember, it may take some practice to locate it accurately.
Be Mindful of Factors That Can Affect Results
  • Gestational age: It may be easier to hear the baby's heartbeat using a stethoscope in the later stages of pregnancy when the baby's heartbeat is stronger and more distinct.
  • Baby's position: The position of the baby in the uterus can impact the ability to hear the heartbeat. If you're unable to hear it at one attempt, try again at a different time or day.
Considerations and Safety Precautions
  • Consult with your healthcare provider: It's important to discuss your intention to listen to your baby's heartbeat at home with your healthcare provider. They can guide you on the best techniques and provide personalized advice based on your specific pregnancy

Does anyone have one of those heart dopplers where u can hear the baby’s heartbeat at home? If so how often did u use it and was the heartbeat part accurate on it? I feel like it’s saying the heartbeat is really low for almost 8 weeks.

I've been trying since I turned 7 weeks 2 days today was the first day I actually could hear the baby's heartbeat I got lucky I noticed if you go to the bathroom first thing in the morning and then try it's the easiest if you tried during the day you're not going to find it because of all the fluid and food we've eaten❤️ start about 1 to 2 in down from your belly button right in the middle is usually right where you'll find that little angel❤️

I can’t find the heartbeat on the Doppler at home. This is my first baby and I might just be using it wrong but I swear it registers the heartbeat I just can’t hear it, although it doesn’t keep the number there for more than a few seconds. Any advice?

Sometimes the moving around of the probe will bring up numbers. I wasn’t able to find my baby clearly without searching for 45 minutes until about 12-13 weeks.

Has anyone else have difficulty with the at home Doppler trying to hear the heartbeat? I can hear mine clear as day but when I find the heart rate of baby which is in the 140-160 range typically I can’t hear anything.

It’s harder to detect in your early weeks because baby is still so small. I thought something was wrong because I couldn’t find it, but even the doctors couldn’t with the Doppler sometimes. They had to use the ultrasound machine. It’s just because baby is little. I’m 19weeks now and I can hear it clear as day. I wouldn’t recommend using Doppler that early it’s cause me a lot of anxiety had me crying in my doctors office lol
