My baby at 19 weeks of pregnancy

Your Baby at 19 Weeks
As big as an artichoke
Length
6.3
Weight
10.6
At 19 weeks, your baby has grown to the size of an artichoke, measuring around 6½ inches from crown to rump and weighing approximately 10 ounces.
This is an exciting time in your pregnancy, especially since your baby's gender can often be identified during an ultrasound at this stage.
What's new this week?
Baby’s Changes Overview
Open 3D Baby to see all changes
  • Sex-Specific Development: If expecting a girl, her ovaries now contain over 6 million primitive egg cells.
  • Auditory Connections: Your baby hears your heartbeat and voice, connecting with you through sound.
  • Umbilical Cord Interaction: There's playful interaction with the umbilical cord, showing developing grip and movement.
  • Fetal Movements: You may feel rhythmic movements indicating your baby is hiccuping, along with kicks and punches.
  • Sensory Development: Rapid brain growth enhances sensory centers, allowing your baby to taste amniotic fluid, potentially influencing future food preferences.
  • Sucking Reflex: Your baby is refining the sucking reflex by practicing on fingers, toes, or the umbilical cord.
Nearly 70% of moms report an increase in energy at this stage, and the experience of feeling your baby's hiccups can be both charming and entirely normal.

Helping baby's development
  • Involve Your Partner: Encourage your partner to participate in preparing for the baby, such as painting the nursery, assembling the crib, or shopping for baby essentials. This teamwork can help reduce stress and make your partner feel involved.

  • Self-Care: Treat yourself to celebrate your progress. Whether it's a prenatal massage, a relaxing bubble bath, or simply enjoying some quiet "me" time, self-care is vital.

  • Iron-Rich Diet: To prevent pregnancy anemia, incorporate iron-rich foods into your diet, such as lean meats, fish, eggs, and iron-fortified cereals. Pairing these with vitamin C-rich foods can enhance iron absorption.

  • Foot Care: For swollen feet, try elevating your feet above your heart, taking regular breaks to stretch and move, wearing comfortable shoes, and considering compression socks to reduce swelling. Staying hydrated can also help manage swelling.
Top Asked Questions
When can I start preparing the nursery for the baby?

Many parents begin preparing the nursery in the second trimester, typically around weeks 20-24. This allows ample time to choose furniture, decorate, and organize baby essentials.

What is the purpose of the anatomy scan?

The anatomy scan, usually done around week 20, is a detailed ultrasound that checks the baby's growth and development, as well as the health of vital organs.

Can I continue to dye my hair during pregnancy?

Most experts consider it safe to dye your hair during pregnancy, especially after the first trimester. Consider using ammonia-free products and ensure good ventilation.

How can I manage pregnancy-related constipation?

To manage constipation, consume high-fiber foods, stay hydrated, and engage in regular physical activity. Consult your healthcare provider before using laxatives or stool softeners.

Every pregnancy is different. With my son I felt hard kicks at 14 weeks but I’m pregnant with my daughter now and I felt her at 20 weeks. If you haven’t felt the baby move yet it’s likely that you have an anterior placenta and that acts as a cushion so when the baby kicks you may not feel it. Or it’s possible that the baby just hasn’t started kicking much. You’ll be okay and it’s super normal💗💗

For first time pregnancy moms: I'm 100% confident I feel little flutters of movement from baby at 19 weeks. So for those of you before 18 or 19 weeks, don't worry you'll be feeling baby move in no time 🥰

This was my little girl at 20 weeks. I wouldn’t say they look like aliens but they definitely look very skinny lol. No fat on their bodies yet.
