Combination Feeding Essentials

Combination Feeding: Balancing Breast Milk and Formula for Your Baby
Exploring the world of feeding options for your baby? 🍼 The decision to combine breast milk and formula can feel overwhelming, but fear not! It's all about finding what works best for you and your little one.
Let's dive into the art of combination feeding, debunk some myths, and empower you with information to make this journey a smooth one.
Flexible Feeding Choices: No Need to Choose Sides
🤱 Feeding your baby doesn't have to be all or nothing. The pressure to exclusively breastfeed stems from the recommendation to do so for the first year. But here's the truth: it's okay to introduce formula too. Don't let the term "exclusive" discourage you from exploring combination feeding. Every drop of breast milk you offer is a gift to your baby's well-being.
Personal Stories: Navigating Two Different Paths
🍼 Let's take a look at two real-life feeding journeys:
  • Journey One: A mix of breast milk and formula from the beginning. It's demanding, dealing with bottles and breasts, but it can be done.
  • Journey Two: Breastfeeding primarily for seven months, occasionally supplementing with formula. Flexibility is key.
Remember, there's no one-size-fits-all approach. Motherhood is a mosaic of unique experiences, and finding the balance that suits your family is what matters most.
Making the Connection: Breast Milk and Formula Harmony
🍶 Is it possible to feed your baby both breast milk and formula? Absolutely! Your breasts respond to demand. If you decrease breastfeeds and introduce formula, your supply will adjust.
Temporary engorgement might occur, but your boobs work on a demand basis. The more your baby feeds from either source, the more milk your body will produce.
Addressing Concerns: Nipple Confusion and Routine
🍼 Nipple confusion can be a concern, but it varies. Some babies transition between breast and bottle effortlessly, while others struggle. If you worry, try these steps:
  • Delay bottle introduction until around six weeks.
  • Continue frequent breastfeeding.
  • Opt for bottle and teat designed for breastfed babies.
📅 Maintaining a routine is essential. If you plan to mainly breastfeed with occasional formula top-ups, regular breastfeeds are vital to sustain your milk supply.
Balancing Act: Mix Feeding and Benefits
🌟 Embrace the benefits of mix feeding:
  • Gives you a break.
  • Enables longer breastfeeding duration.
  • Involves other caregivers in feeding.
  • Allows you to be away if needed.
Remember, mama, it's okay to take care of yourself too. A happy and well-rested parent nurtures a happy and thriving baby.
Transitioning: Dropping Breastfeeds and Mix Feeding Schedule
🍼 Dropping breastfeeds requires planning. Engorgement can result from abrupt stops. Gradual reduction is kinder to your body:
  • Manually express or pump a bit at usual feeding times to relieve pressure.
  • Avoid over-pumping, as it signals your body to produce more milk.
  • Experiment with tactics like warm showers and compresses.
Tips for Success: Mix Feeding Strategies
👶 Ensure a full feed: Offer both the thinner foremilk and the richer hindmilk in every breastfeeding session.
🔄 Switch sides: Just like exclusive breastfeeding, alternate sides to prevent uneven engorgement.
🔀 Pump for missed feeds: If you're away, express milk to avoid discomfort and maintain your supply.
🤝 Agree on a routine: If others feed your baby, sync schedules to avoid oversupply or missed feeds.
💫 Ditch the guilt: Mixed feeding doesn't diminish your parenting prowess. Your baby's well-being is the priority.
The Power of Partial Breastfeeding
🤱 Partial breastfeeding is still beneficial. Even small amounts of breast milk carry essential vitamins and immunity for your baby. Offering the occasional formula bottle doesn't erase these advantages.
Sample Feeding Schedules: Navigating Combination Feeding
🕒 One bottle of formula per day:
  • Breastfeed at 7 am.
  • Breastfeed at 10 am.
  • Breastfeed at 1 pm.
  • Breastfeed at 4 pm.
  • Breastfeed/formula at 7 pm.
  • Formula at 10 pm.
🕒 Two bottles of formula per day:
  • Breastfeed at 7 am.
  • Breastfeed at 10 am.
  • Formula at 1 pm.
  • Breastfeed at 4 pm.
  • Formula/breastfeed at 7 pm.
  • Formula/breastfeed at 10 pm.
Remember, dear parent, the journey of combination feeding is about finding harmony, nourishment, and balance. Trust yourself, follow your baby's cues, and adapt your routine as needed. You've got this! 🌈👶🍼

Ugh literally the worst, I went thru this too but thankfully little man passed all his but some of them were really close, I’m doing breast and formula too and his numbers were better with formula. I couldn’t get out of the hospital fast enough, poor baby went through it these past 3 days. We’ve been home for a couple hours now and he’s already eating so much better. Just hang in there!!!!

I have a question for all my breast feeding moms. Should I wait to buy a wireless pump or should I get one now before he comes? I really want to combination feed.

Okay if y’all switch from combination feeding to exclusively breastfeeding, don’t tell wic. They just jacked my benefits up, I thought I was going to get a lot more but now I just get like 2 dozen eggs, more cheese, more milk, baby food and tuna 🐟

Thanks for the info! I just got it and I’m giving her formula because she can’t latch on so they told me to call them if I do end up breastfeeding
