Tests for gestational diabetes

If you think you have gestational diabetes, don't worry, a medical team will test you to see if you do.

Gestational diabetes is detected between 24 and 28 weeks of pregnancy using a relatively simple and quick test. They will measure your blood sugar levels in an oral glucose tolerance test.

You are then asked to ingest a large amount of glucose at one time, and then the test is done by taking two blood samples, one hour and then two hours after ingestion.

A single blood glucose value equal to or higher than the defined thresholds establishes the diagnosis.

Just did testing for gestational diabetes and my test results were high. It was 144 , I know I have a second test to complete but I feel totally beat, I feel depressed and defeated completely. Is there any mothers that have gestational diabetes and would like to share tips on how to overcome this ?

Why did you test so ealy? I tested at 30 weeks and had to diet. Try not to get on pills or shots. Eat smaller meals and have healthy snaks. When you see the specialist they will give you a whole book of things to eat and times. It's nothing too bad. You got this

I think it was just part or the beginning blood testing … he said something was high and he told me to come back so I can get the sugar testing done and that’s when it was high I think I have to now do a three hour one but I’m just going to start now with eating right . Thank you so much

I got it too, have to take my blood sugar 4 times a day and take insulin at night. It sucks but we do what's best for our babies.

You drink a sugary drink in 5 minutes wait an hour and get a blood draw. You will see doctor as well for just a regular appt./check up generally.

For me, I just went to the lab about two hours prior and then went to my appt. I ate normally the night before & didn’t get the chance to eat breakfast anyway, so I ended up accidentally fasting for 12 hours prior to my test. I personally liked the flavor of the drink, I got the fruit punch one, but omg I felt like crap the rest of the day. I was super anxious about my results & until I did some research, it turns out GD is not something you can control as much as you think you can bc it’s more hormonal than anything. I’ve known super healthy fit girls get it & girls who didn’t eat as healthy not get it, so it kind of gave me peace for whatever the outcome was, to know it wasn’t my fault if I had been positive for it. I hope this gives you some peace of mind & praying you pass!!🩷💕

So I'm just curious. I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes but I'm not sure why. My numbers on the test are high. But I still will eat my sweets cause that's all I been craving and when I test a hour after eating the sweets my sugar levels are still in range so how is that gestational diabetes.

I'd be really careful with gestational diabetes, it can harm you and the baby, I'd just get a glucose monitor and check it ever so often after meals. Definitely follow whatever advice your obgyn gives you because blood sugar ain't no joke lol but yeah that's weird they said you had gestational diabetes even though your levels fell within range. Maybe you were boarderline? I'd call your OB office and ask. Best of luck mama🫶🏻 🤍
