Mindfulness and Relaxation Techniques

Relaxation Techniques
The pelvic floor muscles are a crucial part of the body, spanning from the pubic bone to the coccyx and between the sit bones.
They play an integral role in bowel, bladder, and sexual function, as well as providing support to internal organs like the bladder, bowels, and uterus.
For optimal functioning of these systems, the pelvic floor muscles need to contract and relax effectively.
Tightness in the pelvic floor can lead to a range of issues such as pelvic and abdominal pain, back pain, sexual dysfunction, bowel dysfunction, and urinary dysfunction.
Here are several techniques that individuals can use to promote pelvic floor relaxation:
1. Diaphragmatic Breathing
  • Lie on your back with one hand on your chest and the other on your belly.
  • Inhale gently through your nose, allowing your belly and chest to expand naturally.
  • Pay attention to the expansion of your rib cage to the sides and even through your back.
  • Observe if you're unintentionally "pushing" your belly or pelvic floor out. Try to allow a natural expansion rather than forcing it.
  • Diaphragmatic breathing helps coordinate the movement of the diaphragm and pelvic floor muscles, promoting relaxation and expansion of both.
2. Exercise
  • Engage in low-impact exercises like walking, swimming, light weight training, stretching, or yoga to enhance flexibility and circulation.
  • Regular movement and exercise can contribute to overall muscle health, including the pelvic floor.
  • Consult a pelvic floor therapist for exercise recommendations tailored to your needs.
3. Positioning
  • Certain positions, like Child's Pose and Happy Baby Pose in yoga, can encourage relaxation of the pelvic floor muscles.
  • Incorporate diaphragmatic breathing into these positions for enhanced relaxation.
4. Imagery
  • Visualize your pelvic floor dropping towards the ground or gently expanding, as if you're actively relaxing it.
  • Envision your sit bones moving away from each other.
  • Picture your pubic bone and tailbone moving apart.
  • Imagine your vaginal opening as a circle and visualize it expanding.
  • Think of your vulva or scrotum lowering toward your feet.
  • Imagine your vagina or anus gently opening, as if yawning.
5. Meditation
  • Engage in mindfulness meditation to achieve full-body relaxation, including the pelvic floor.
  • Consistent mindfulness meditation has shown promise in managing pelvic pain.
  • Utilize meditation apps to guide you through relaxation exercises if needed.
6. Awareness of Activators
  • Recognize activities, emotions, or environments that might activate your pelvic floor muscles.
  • Make an effort to change habits or thought patterns that contribute to excessive tension.
  • Pay attention to other areas in your body that hold tension, like the shoulders or jaw.
  • When you notice tension in these areas, intentionally relax your pelvic floor to promote overall relaxation.
Remember, everyone's experience is unique, so explore these techniques to find what works best for you. Consulting a healthcare provider or pelvic floor therapist can provide personalized guidance and support for promoting pelvic floor relaxation and overall well-being.

If any of you are interested in introducing the concept of mindfulness to your wee ones, this book is super great! It's part of a whole series. I haven't read the others yet but will be collecting the whole set as my boy grows. He's only about 8 months now but the way I see it, it's never too early to introduce these concepts and incorporate them into the every day as the years go by. He really seems to enjoy story time before bed so when I saw this one, I had to snatch it up for our little library. There's even a guided meditation in the back for older kids and parents too! Got it off Amazon. I forget exactly how much it cost when I ordered it.
