Breastfeeding Bliss Tips

Breastfeeding Bliss Tips
Breastfeeding is a wonderful and natural way to nourish your baby while fostering a strong bond between the two of you.
As a pregnant woman, it's important to equip yourself with knowledge and techniques that will contribute to a successful breastfeeding journey.
In this article, we will explore essential tips for proper positioning, latching techniques, and feeding schedules to help you navigate this beautiful experience.
Mastering Proper Positioning
Positioning plays a crucial role in ensuring effective breastfeeding and preventing discomfort for both you and your baby. Here are some key tips to keep in mind:
  • Cradle Hold: Place your baby's head in the crook of your arm, with the body facing you. Support your breast with your other hand, guiding your nipple to your baby's mouth.
  • Football Hold: Hold your baby's body under your arm, with the head supported by your hand. Your baby's body will be positioned beside you, resembling a football.
  • Side-Lying Position: Lie down on your side, and place your baby facing you. This position is particularly helpful during nighttime feedings, allowing you to rest while nursing.
Remember to keep your baby's body facing you, with the head and body aligned. This ensures a comfortable latch and proper milk transfer.
Achieving a Good Latch
A good latch is essential for effective milk transfer and preventing nipple soreness. Follow these techniques to achieve a proper latch:
  • Open Wide: Wait for your baby to open their mouth wide, resembling a yawn, before bringing them to your breast. This allows for a deeper latch and optimal milk flow.
  • Chin First: Ensure that your baby's chin touches your breast first, while their nose is free for breathing. This helps them take in more breast tissue and promotes a comfortable feeding position.
  • Lip-to-Nipple Alignment: Position your baby's lower lip slightly away from the base of your nipple, aiming for their upper lip to reach further onto the breast. This allows for a deep latch and effective milk transfer.
A good latch may take some practice, so don't hesitate to seek assistance from a lactation consultant or a healthcare professional for guidance and support.
Establishing a Feeding Schedule
In the early days of breastfeeding, it is important to feed your baby on demand to establish a healthy milk supply. However, as your baby grows and becomes more efficient at feeding, you can gradually introduce a flexible feeding schedule. Here are some considerations:
  • Frequency: Newborns typically feed every 2-3 hours, but they may feed more frequently during growth spurts. Pay attention to your baby's hunger cues, such as rooting or sucking on their hands, to determine when to feed.
  • Duration: Allow your baby to nurse for as long as they need on each breast. This helps ensure they receive both the foremilk, which quenches their thirst, and the hindmilk, which provides essential nutrients.
  • Nighttime Feedings: During nighttime, try to keep the lights dim and minimize distractions to help your baby and yourself maintain a calm and sleepy environment.
Remember, every baby is unique, and their feeding needs may vary. Trust your instincts and listen to your baby's cues to establish a feeding routine that works best for both of you.

The best way to relax about it is talking to your doctor so they can refer you to a lactating nurse/doctor.

Remember nipple should be up against their roof of the mouth… also it might be a bit hard of getting your baby to latch on but always keep trying! Don’t give up, your baby will get latched on unless they are uninterested in it. When I did it first time, I did formula also cause I felt like my baby wasn’t getting full😅 but after that I just kept pumping and eating oatmeal will help with production and also drink one beer will help with production at least that’s the Mexican saying and it does help! But when it’s cold, always make sure your chests do back is covered up, it’s a Mexican saying that if you don’t cover up, you’ll get dried up and also wear socks. I know these saying are crazy but hey I believe them, I seen it done with my sisters and it helps. Also once you start breastfeeding you can sometimes get lumps in your breast… when that happens let hot water hit your breast and massage it to help reduce the swelling and also pump! Always keep pumping! I would always pump before and after feeding and after 6 months I didn’t pump anymore and I would just take my breast out whenever baby wanted it. Also buy nipple cream so your nipples won’t start to dry up or hurt. It’s safe for baby to eat off it, so you won’t have to keep taking it off… I can show you a picture of it if you want! And always ask the lactation of any concerns or questions you have! She will definitely help! Don’t be scared! There is no dumb questions!

Does he talk bottle? If so start by doing more bottles and less feeding and do that over time until he’s totally off the breast.

I kept trying to bring my boob to her, but your supposed to bring them to the boob. Like, when was saying like touch the nipple to the nose pointed up and all, and as soon as they do that face where they got their mouth super open, get as much boob as you can in your hand and push their head into it. I know that sounds bad, but it’s hard for them to do it on their own, and it gets a good latch! Lily explained it pretty well tho. And I recommend using coconut oil instead of nipple cream, it does wonders for me and it’s antibacterial so it helps reduce things like thrush if you ever got it. Also, if breastfeeding keeps not working, get her checked out for a tongue tie, it could be that her tongue can’t reach well, which is very painful for you. Or nipple shields too, but I never used em and I hear they affect your production somehow? Idk lol just wat I know. Also, it’s gonna hurt a lot at first since she’s cluster feeding and your boobs aren’t used to it, so hopefully it just doesn’t last long

It is amazing! Definitely do it! It only sucks because you have to do it every 2 hours because it’s not like formula and your boobs leak through the night and your nipples get sore sometimes but other than that it is such a great way to bond with your baby and gives you something to give your baby that nobody else can and you can have peace of mind knowing your baby is getting a safe nutrients and not no formula that can be expensive or not stocked up in stores and some formula is getting recalled because it’s getting babies sick and killing them! Breastfeeding wont do that and it is free! BREASTFEEDING FOR THE WIN!

I was told you’re supposed to eat as if you’re pregnant when you breastfeed/pump cause it takes a lot out of you so that’s why you’re always hungry and/or sleepy when you’re done & it also helps with milk supply. I personally don’t eat that much, I just make sure I snack enough and drink a shit ton of water lol but yes I always have hunger pains after

Be patient with yourself. Order a breast warmer or use a warm rag when your milk comes in. It’s been helping me with easier flow when it’s not producing as much. Start stimulating a few weeks before too I heard that helps too

Drink body armor ! It helps produce your milk flow , get you some nipple cream and a couple days before you have the baby start using it so your nipples don't crack and bleed , when your in the shower rub your boobs to help with the milk flow as well , and if baby doesn't latch right away it's okay ! Its new to them just as much as it is you so be patient mama 💜

When he’s fussy while you’re trying to get him to latch try finger feeding him (express some milk, wipe with index finger or middle and put it to the roof of his mouth and let him suck) repeat that 2-4x then try to get him to latch again.

My baby is almost a month old and I’ve mainly been bottle feeding because she will not latch when fussy! However, I’ve noticed that if I give her a little in a bottle first to calm her down, she will usually latch afterwards.

My boyfriend did some research for me and found that berries with antioxidants, like blueberries for example, help... Also fennel seed, lean meats, coconut water/milk.... It really just says that if you're eating a balanced diet, you should have a good supply! (: My mom also recommended me to take fish oil vitamins to help my milk production, so maybe try that as well! And idk if your OB told you, but mine said to continue taking my prenatals during the breastfeeding stage because those nutrients can still get carried to the milk and be good for baby still. ❤️

There are different ways to hold the baby depending on your body shape. They told me I should use a football under my arm hold
