Breastfeeding During Pregnancy

Breastfeeding During Pregnancy: Nurturing Two Little Ones 🤱🤰
Breastfeeding during pregnancy is known as tandem nursing, and it's a beautiful way to provide nourishment, comfort, and love to both your older child and your growing baby.
Here's some information and tips to help you navigate breastfeeding during pregnancy:
Changes in Breast Milk: 🥛🤰
  • Colostrum Transition: As your pregnancy progresses, your body undergoes changes in preparation for the arrival of your new baby. One of these changes is the transition of breast milk from mature milk to colostrum, which is the first milk produced in the early days after childbirth. You may notice a decrease in milk supply and changes in the taste and consistency of your breast milk.
  • Nursing Strike or Decreased Interest: Some breastfeeding toddlers may experience a temporary decrease in interest or a nursing strike during pregnancy due to the changes in breast milk or your body's hormonal shifts. This is typically a temporary phase, and nursing patterns may return to normal once the new baby arrives.
Nourishing Your Growing Baby and Older Child: 🍼🧒
  • Balanced Nutrition: As you breastfeed during pregnancy, it's essential to ensure that both your older child and growing baby receive adequate nutrition. Focus on a well-balanced diet rich in nutrients, including protein, calcium, iron, and vitamins.
  • Frequent Nursing: Some breastfeeding mothers find that their older child nurses more frequently during pregnancy. This can be due to a decreased milk supply or the need for additional comfort and reassurance. Allow your child to nurse as often as they need, as this helps maintain the breastfeeding relationship and provides emotional support.
Physical Comfort and Self-Care: 💆‍♀️💗
  • Nursing Positions: Explore different nursing positions that are comfortable for you and your child, especially as your belly grows during pregnancy. Experiment with side-lying, cradle, or sitting positions that alleviate any discomfort.
  • Self-Care: Taking care of yourself is essential during this time. Ensure you're getting enough rest, staying hydrated, and eating nutritious meals to support your own well-being and milk production. Seek support from your partner, family, or friends to help with household tasks and caring for your older child.
Seeking Support: 🤝🌟
  • Lactation Consultant or Breastfeeding Specialist: Consulting with a lactation consultant or breastfeeding specialist can provide valuable guidance and support tailored to your unique situation. They can offer suggestions for managing tandem nursing and address any concerns you may have.
  • Online Support Groups: Joining online communities or support groups for breastfeeding while pregnant or tandem nursing can connect you with other mothers who have similar experiences. Sharing stories, tips, and concerns with others who have been through or are going through the same journey can be empowering and reassuring.

Has anyone every switched antidepressants during pregnancy? I am currently on a low dose of Prozac but my doctor recommended that I switch to Zoloft towards the end of my pregnancy because that’s better for breastfeeding. It just makes me nervous switching while I’m pregnant. Not sure if anyone else has done this?

I was just put on Zoloft for my OCD, my pcp assured me it was safe and I went to the obgyn yesterday and the nurse didn't say anything. But I started it at about 27 weeks

I’m currently 32 weeks. Do you ladies recommend taking anything to prep for breastfeeding? I didn’t produce enough milk with my first pregnancy. What do you ladies recommend? #32weeks #breastfeeding

I noticed that when I was pumping every 3 hrs, I produced ALOT of milk but exclusively breastfeeding, my supply went down ALOT. So I recommend pumping after each feed to keep the supply abundant. Your body creates what’s needed so if your breast are constantly stimulated, the milk supply will fill to what’s being demanded.

Ya I didn't have much either so we had to supplement. But we didn't care just as long as she was fed. I was able to go 10 months with my daughter. She had a full mouthful of teeth by the time she was a year old so....I was so glad she stopped haha😊

Breastfeeding moms: have you ever had pain in your breast from baby "pulling too hard" during a peak? My nipple doesn't hurt, it doesn't feel engorged. It just feels like she's pumping nothing

Pull on it like she would suck and see what you get out. It’s normal to experience a little discomfort in the beginning.
