Toxoplasmosis and pregnancy: prohibited foods

Toxoplasmosis is not a serious disease unless you were not immune before you became pregnant. To avoid getting toxoplasmosis during your pregnancy, the first rule of thumb is to wash all your fruits and vegetables thoroughly with vinegar.

You should also stop eating raw or undercooked animal products, such as raw milk cheeses, steak tartares, deli meats or cold cuts, unpasteurized milk, and raw eggs in egg creams and mayonnaise (no eggnog for you this year, sorry!).

One last piece of advice: if you have a cat and are not immune to toxoplasmosis, have someone else change the litter box during your pregnancy.

Some may find this unappetizing but I have always preferred my steak rare when out to eat, I know there is a 0.2%-0.1% chance of toxoplasmosis in pregnancy and salmonella is uncommon. Has anyone eaten there steak cooked less than medium? I can’t do a medium steak too tough for me.

I always prefer my steak a good med-rare which means it's very pink/red in the center -- i don't do medium or well done steak.. if I wanted beef jerky, I'd go to the gas station, not a steak house πŸ˜‚

I’m a medium rare girly myself, I hardly ate anything but ground beef for meat while I was pregnant because everything else made me sick and my rbc count was jacked up

I ate a lamb chop that was medium well. When I realized it I sent it back to be cooked longer. Should I be concerned about toxoplasmosis ? #concernedmomma #firsttimemom

No, you'll be fine. It's rare. Just like eating med rare steak or sushi, the risk is there but it's not super common. I personally ate med rare steak probably once a month in all my pregnancies
