Umbilical cord bleeding: what to do?
The umbilical cord has connected you to your baby throughout your pregnancy. After delivery, it's time to cut it.
- The cord needs a few weeks to dry, heal, and then fall off.
- During this time, you should clean it regularly with a cotton swab soaked in warm water to avoid infection.
- Don't worry if you see a blood-tinged discharge before the cord falls off. This is due to the separation of the blood vessels.
- If the bleeding is heavy, red, smelly or contains pus, see your pediatrician who will prescribe the right treatment.

Does anybody else's baby's umbilical cord smell like rotting flesh?? I don't know if this is normal or not. I don't remember this part of having a baby. There's no puss or bleeding. It just stinks!!

Probably clean it and just watchout to see if it goes way ? My son had that smell and he did got like some puss and bleed.

My baby cord just fell off at a week old today, no bleeding or anything but should I still clean it with something? He can’t take baths yet just sponge baths for now, till his ring falls off.

Has anyone experienced the umbilical cord detaches from placenta? My high risk doctor said this could be the reason why I had my bleeding a few weeks ago. I stopped bleeding for about and week and just now I started again? Is this normal?
