The Impact of Smoking During Pregnancy

The Impact of Smoking and Second-hand Smoke During Pregnancy
šŸš Smoking: A Hazardous Choice
Smoking during pregnancy poses significant risks to both you and your unborn baby. šŸš¬ The harmful chemicals present in cigarettes can cross the placenta and affect your baby's growth and development. Studies have shown that smoking during pregnancy increases the chances of premature birth, low birth weight, and developmental issues. In fact, smoking is a leading cause of preventable birth complications and infant mortality. Quitting smoking is the best decision you can make for your health and the well-being of your baby.
šŸ’Ø Second-Hand Smoke: Hidden Dangers
Even if you're not a smoker, exposure to second-hand smoke can still harm you and your baby. Second-hand smoke contains over 4,000 toxic chemicals, many of which are known to cause cancer. Breathing in second-hand smoke can lead to reduced oxygen supply to the baby, which can result in growth problems and increased risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). It's important to create a smoke-free environment for yourself and your baby, both during pregnancy and after childbirth.
šŸ‘©ā€šŸ‘§ā€šŸ‘¦ Protecting Your Baby's Future
By quitting smoking and avoiding second-hand smoke, you can significantly improve the health outcomes for your baby. Here are some important steps to take:
  1. Quit smoking: Quitting smoking is challenging, but there are resources available to support you. Speak with your healthcare provider about smoking cessation programs, nicotine replacement therapies, and other strategies that can help you overcome nicotine addiction. Quitting smoking will not only reduce the risks to your baby but also improve your own health.
  2. Create a smoke-free home: Ensure that your home is a safe and smoke-free environment. If you have family members or friends who smoke, kindly ask them to smoke outside and away from the house. Ventilate your living spaces regularly, and consider using air purifiers to minimize any residual smoke particles.
  3. Avoid second-hand smoke: Stay away from places where people smoke, such as bars, restaurants, or designated smoking areas. If you encounter someone smoking near you, politely ask them to move away or find a smoke-free area. Remember, your health and the health of your baby are your top priorities.
  4. Seek support: Reach out to your partner, family, and friends for support during this crucial time. Let them know about your decision to quit smoking and the importance of a smoke-free environment for you and your baby. Joining support groups or online communities can also provide encouragement and guidance from others who have successfully quit smoking.

I still smoke at 26 weeks, I'm extremely high risk and have lost 11 babies and have a bunch of medical problems. I was never supposed to get pregnant much less make it to 26 weeks of pregnancy. I have beat myself up so bad because I felt like I was hurting my son by smoking and my OB and I have had so many long conversations about how marijuana is what has helped me make it this far with my son and that smoking doesn't make me a bad mom and he is super healthy and so strong. This is the first pregnancy where I smoked, it has saved me so much. When I tried to stop it put way too much stress on my body and organs. I have alpha 1 which is a liver disease that affects all of my body and organs. I use legal medical marijuana and have been checked by an ob at least once, sometimes twice or even appointments all week by an ob, a fetal specialist, cardiologist, pulmonologist, and GI and all believe smoking is 100% what has kept my baby so healthy and happy and safe. I went into preterm labor at 19weeks and they were even able to stop it 100% and my cervix has gotten 2cms longer because I stayed relaxed and in bed and stress free and actually slept and eat thanks to marijuana. Don't feel bad or beat yourself up if you smoke and don't stop, there is so much worse drugs out there that you could be doing and if marijuana is the worst and helps you from needing pain pills to keep you from hurting or anxiety and depression pills to help with mental illness then you are in great condition. I stopped taking pain meds 4 years ago so I could try to get pregnant and not miscarriage (in case all the meds were what was causing it, it wasn't but that's besides the point) my OB took me off of my heart meds, depression and anxiety meds, and migraine/ seizure meds when we got pregnant because they could hurt the baby and recommended that I not stop smoking because it was gonna be the only thing i could use to manage my conditions that wouldnt risk hurting my son.

Thoughts on smoking Mary Jane during pregnancy? Iā€™ve heard it helps with nausea but also have heard it can cause ADHD and low birth weight. Has anyone talked to doctors about this? Thanks!

While I was pregnant, my doctors said it was recommended to stop smoking but not really necessary so I continued throughout the whole pregnant. My baby was born 6lbs 4oz but was healthy and only had to spend one extra night at the hospital because her body was having trouble keeping her temp up until she was 5 days old

Is it completely safe to do the vuse while pregnant? I know I heard the smoking and vaping during pregnancy and the baby turned out fine. But I would like to be sure too. I haven't vaped as much just bc of the babys sake. But I've only done it here and there just to satisfy my nicotine level.
