Pregnancy Diet Plan

What to eat and what to avoid
As you prepare to welcome your little one into the world, it's important to pay attention to what you eat.
What to eat
During pregnancy, your body needs more of certain nutrients to support your baby's growth and development.
Here are some of the most important nutrients to focus on:
  • Protein: Protein is essential for the growth and repair of tissues in your body, and it's especially important during pregnancy. Good sources of protein include lean meat, poultry, fish, eggs, beans, and lentils.
  • Calcium: Calcium is important for the development of your baby's bones and teeth, as well as your own bone health. Good sources of calcium include dairy products, leafy greens, tofu, and fortified foods like orange juice.
  • Iron: Iron is important for the formation of red blood cells, which carry oxygen to your baby and help prevent anemia. Good sources of iron include red meat, poultry, fish, beans, and fortified cereals.
  • Folic acid: Folic acid is essential for the healthy development of your baby's brain and spinal cord. Good sources of folic acid include leafy greens, fortified cereals, and supplements.
  • Omega-3 fatty acids: Omega-3s are important for the development of your baby's brain and eyes. Good sources of omega-3s include fatty fish like salmon and sardines, as well as walnuts and flaxseed.
What to avoid
While there are many foods that are safe and healthy to eat during pregnancy, there are also some foods that should be avoided to reduce the risk of foodborne illness or other complications.
Here are some foods to avoid:
  • Raw or undercooked meat: Raw or undercooked meat can contain harmful bacteria that can cause food poisoning.
  • Raw or undercooked eggs: Raw or undercooked eggs can also contain harmful bacteria.
  • Raw or undercooked fish: Raw or undercooked fish, such as sushi or sashimi, can contain harmful bacteria or parasites that can be harmful to your baby's development.
  • Fish with high levels of mercury: Some types of fish, like shark, swordfish, and king mackerel, can contain high levels of mercury that can be harmful to your baby's development.
  • Unpasteurized dairy products: Unpasteurized dairy products can contain harmful bacteria that can cause foodborne illness.
  • Alcohol: Alcohol can have serious negative effects on your baby's development, so it's important to avoid it completely during pregnancy.

It’s been confirmed I have gestational diabetes and anemia, anyone else? I start my blood monitor this weekend and will be very strict on the diet plan they put me on. It’s a bit scary, as I generally eat pretty healthy and high nutrient foods but diabetes is very rampant in my family. Taking any tips and recommendations!

Hang in there momma! I know how you feel! This is my third pregnancy and I’ve had it in all 3! Eat lots of protein. Avoid carbs. Or limit them as much as you can!

Just wanted to say I'm super proud of myself. I have type 2 diabetes, went into pregnancy with an A1C of 7.0. I cracked down hard on my diet and as much as it's sucked this whole time, my A1C is down to 6.2 (pre-diabetic range!) No meds, completely diet controlled this whole time. And the midwives didn't believe that I could do it, telling me diet control won't last long and trying to push insulin on me. Feels so, so good to know what I'm capable of and prove them wrong. 🤗
