Snoring

Snoring
You may have noticed that you've started snoring a bit more than usual during your pregnancy.

It's simply the vibration of your throat tissues as you breathe while sleeping. It's caused by the changes in hormone levels and the extra pressure on your airways due to the growing baby.

Is it normal?
Yes!  It may be annoying for your partner but totally normal! As the body undergoes various changes during pregnancy, it can affect the airways and cause snoring.

For example, increased levels of progesterone can cause relaxation of the muscles in the body, including those in the throat.

Additionally, the growing fetus can put pressure on the diaphragm and lungs, making it more difficult to breathe and leading to snoring.
Prevent and care
Snoring can be uncomfortable and disruptive for some women. Proper management of snoring, such as sleeping on your side and using a humidifier, can help improve sleep quality.
  • Sleep on your side, as it can reduce snoring compared to sleeping on your back.
  • Use a humidifier in your bedroom to alleviate nasal congestion.
  • Consider elevating your head with extra pillows to improve airflow.
You may not realize you snore until your partner says something. Or perhaps you have woken yourself up at night with the added noise. Whatever the case, take note of your snoring and discuss it with your doctor.

When to consult?
While it's normal, it's always a good idea to discuss any new symptoms or changes in your health with your healthcare provider to ensure everything is progressing smoothly.
Top Asked Questions
Why do hormonal changes during pregnancy cause snoring, and when is it most common?

Hormonal fluctuations and increased blood flow can lead to nasal congestion and snoring, and it's most common during the second and third trimesters.

Can I take over-the-counter medications to alleviate snoring during pregnancy?

It's advisable to avoid over-the-counter medications during pregnancy. Instead, try sleeping on your side, using a humidifier, or elevating your head with extra pillows.

When should I consult with a healthcare provider about snoring during pregnancy?

If snoring is severe, persistent, or accompanied by other concerning symptoms, consult with your healthcare provider to rule out any underlying issues.

Anyone else have snoring or sleep apnea issues? I just woke up and had to catch my breath a few times. Now THAT was scary, first time it’s happened and I’m pretty sure I wasn’t breathing. 😣

Snoring or not. Don’t wake up a pregnant woman in life ever. Men really don’t have common sense.
