Inducing labor : membrane sweeping

You've heard about induction and, among the different techniques, you wonder what membrane sweeping is?

  • It is a very simple manual procedure that allows you to induce contractions without the use of pharmaceutical solutions.
  • The gynecologist mechanically detaches the inner surface of the cervix with a finger, without breaking the water bag.
  • In most cases, this simple and painless procedure causes contractions to start within 48 hours.
  • The main benefit is that no hormones are required. Membrane sweeping is a gentler, more natural technique.

Hi ladies what is a membrane sweep? I don't believe in induction. Because pitocin causes stress on mom and baby. Mind you I'm having a 9 pound or more boy and was wondering about this membrane sweep I keep hearing you ladies talking about.

Following, I got induced using pitocin with my second baby and whew those contractions were not fun! They did break my water first to see if that would bring on strong enough contractions but it didn’t

I thought a membrane sweep would be a safer way to induce but I found out it may not be. I was induced with my first and my twins but after taking some child birth classes and I got educated, I don't want that ever again.

Just got back from Dr.s appointment 39+4 and I dilated 1 cm so they did the membrane sweep and Dr. told me it was the easiest membrane sweep ever and head was super low. Let’s see if it works and I go into labor soon 🥲

No. It didn’t hurt it just felt uncomfortable but it doesn’t take longer than 3 minutes. It felt like pressure then when they moved their fingers around it just makes you cramp and that’s what makes it uncomfortable.

Hey! Sure..when I went to my Dr appointment I was 1.5 cm..Since then I have lost a lot of mucus plug with blood show. & I been having contractions every day that are strong. I can actually feel them…before it was contractions where my stomach would only get tight. Those were Braxton hicks contractions

What’s a membrane sweep?

It's performed by a healthcare provider and involves them inserting gloved fingers into your cervix to loosen your amniotic sac from your uterus. It can ether work or not work, but it helps induce a natural labor before they induce :)

No mama sorry I have not. But my due date is June 15 and still no symptoms of anything . Baby is too comfortable in there . And the fact that the baby is healthy as of now . I just don’t get why I am measuring 43 weeks if I’m actually 39 weeks.
