All About Pregnancy Denial

Pregnancy Denial: What Are the Symptoms?
If you suspect you may be experiencing pregnancy denial, it's important to understand the symptoms and seek appropriate support.
Here are some common signs to watch out for:
Dismissal of Pregnancy Signs
You may find yourself dismissing or ignoring the classic signs of pregnancy, such as missed periods, breast tenderness, and nausea.
You may attribute these symptoms to other causes or brush them off as unrelated to pregnancy.
Denial of Pregnancy Tests
Even if you take multiple pregnancy tests that confirm your pregnancy, you may struggle to believe the results.
You may doubt the accuracy of the tests or convince yourself that they must be wrong.
Continued Menstruation
You may feel emotionally detached from your pregnancy.
This disconnection can extend to a lack of interest in prenatal care or seeking medical advice.
Some women experiencing pregnancy denial may continue to have regular menstrual cycles, leading them to believe they are not pregnant.
However, it's important to note that some women can experience light bleeding or spotting during early pregnancy, which can be mistaken for a regular period.
Disconnection from Pregnancy
You might avoid thinking or talking about it, and may resist making any preparations or plans for the arrival of the baby.
Subconscious Denial Mechanisms
Unconsciously, you may engage in denial mechanisms to cope with the reality of pregnancy.
This can include avoiding situations or people that remind you of pregnancy, downplaying the significance of your growing belly, or rationalizing that the changes in your body are unrelated to pregnancy.
If you identify with any of these symptoms, it's important to reach out for support and seek professional help. Here are some steps you can take:
  • Talk to a Healthcare Provider: Schedule an appointment with your healthcare provider to discuss your concerns and undergo a thorough examination. They can provide guidance and help you understand your options moving forward.
  • Seek Mental Health Support: Reach out to a mental health professional who specializes in perinatal mental health. They can provide a safe space for you to explore and address your feelings, and offer appropriate interventions or therapy.
  • Join Support Groups: Connect with other women who have experienced or are experiencing pregnancy denial. Support groups or online communities can offer a sense of belonging and provide valuable insights and coping strategies.
  • Involve Loved Ones: Share your feelings with trusted family members, friends, or your partner. Their understanding and support can make a significant difference in helping you navigate through this challenging time.

My mom was the one who told me I was pregnant. 😂. I was sleeping a lot. I was supposed to help her cook dinner one day and I was like “mom i don’t feel good, i’m going to take a nap” and she was like “you’re pregnant” and i was like “no i’m not, i just need a nap”. This girl woke me up out of my sleep with 2 tests she got from the dollar store. I took the tests and they came up IMMEDIATELY. 😂😂. Then I went to urgent care to take a test and then a free pregnancy test place to get a test. 😂

Is there something wrong with me that im in denial about being pregnant 🤣 even though I’m almost done with my first trimester. like maybe because of my miscarriage and im use to bad things always happening to me. Maybe because im in denial that I’d be a mom so soon. Like im numb even when I seen the baby moving in me all active last week. Idk I want to enjoy this.. Two weeks left of my first trimester this week and next.

No it’s not anything wrong with you. Sometimes we just tend to block it out subconsciously/consciously as a defense mechanism if anything bad should happen. You know??? Sometimes we don’t want to get too excited because we fear if we do that’s when things go bad. I get it. I’m more earlier than you (5 weeks 5 days) and totally don’t think about being pregnant at all. I just take my vitamins and try to be more conscious of what I put into my body, but don’t obsess over being pregnant just yet.

What Dominique said! There is nothing wrong with you! I’m going through the same thing right now and didn’t want to admit it to anyone bc ppl can be so judgmental. I want to love my baby without insecurities, but that takes time and it’s different for everyone. You and I will get out of denial when it’s time. Don’t worry Love!
